Do the right thing- Always.

What does it mean to do the right thing? The concept seems simple enough. Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing in every action you take and in every decision you make, especially when no one is looking. In our daily lives, this may not be so difficult. You take a stand and commit to always telling the truth, no matter the consequences and if you make a mistake, you own up to it and make it right. It is putting these principles into practice in our business dealings where things can get more complicated.

In a position as a business leader, integrity, ethics, and values are always tested by the dynamics of business life. We encounter many personal situations that have a clear right and wrong but in our business dealings, sometimes the lines aren’t so clear. Too often, we fall into the trap of doing what is best for profits or what is best for ourselves and not what is ethical or honorable. Part of doing the right thing is ensuring that your decisions are based on what is right and less on what is popular. It is about adhering to a set standard of ethics to guide your business decisions for the greater or common good and not for selfish reasons or self promotion.

Some examples of doing the right thing in our industry are:

  • Focusing on alignment of business goals and people at the expense of profits.
  • Putting in extra time to help others learn, grow, and succeed
  • Maintaining personal character when no one is watching
  • Being honest with clients about delays, issues, or complications that affect their business operations
  • Conducting operations with integrity and transparency
  • Making difficult personnel decisions to ensure an adherence to overall company culture

In business, doing the right thing is often the hard thing to do

which is why it can be uncomfortable, but as leaders, we provide the moral compass for our own company, our clients, our associates, and the industry as a whole. Sometimes difficult decisions must be made for the good of the company and sometimes doing the right thing can make our life temporarily more difficult but we must push forward. Doing the right thing is the key to overall business success. A focus on personal gain can lead to short term success but doing the right thing usually ensures the ultimate long term emotional returns. When you prioritize ethical adherence and emotional returns with hard work, grit, and determination, the financial aspects fall into place all on their own.

By motivating our people through our own actions of developing a positive and encouraging environment, it plants the seeds of success in our workplace. Alternatively, failure to do the right thing has the opposite effect; it reduces drive, encourages a laissez faire individualistic attitude, and ultimately results in loss of talent and turnover. When we experience turnover, it is on us as business leaders to not overlook or rationalize the loss. We must always be looking for ways to learn and improve by taking responsibility and addressing any underlying issues. At Halo, by ensuring that our employees feel valued, our clients have confidence in our work and commitment to their success, and our integrity and reputation is respected across the industry, we can trust the foundation we have laid for future success.

At Halo, Do the Right Thing is part of who we are.

Some of the ways that Halo works every day to embody the spirit of Do the Right Thing is through our mentorship program. As our team expands, we invest in our new hires by surrounding them with highly knowledgeable and experienced mentors that help to guide them through our processes and ensure that they understand our culture. We guarantee that every person in our organization fits our culture, is in the right seat, and knows their value to our operation. Our teams are instilled with our Halo Habits through examples set by their leadership every single day because we know that a team member that feels appreciated, valued, and heard is a team member willing to go the extra mile for our success.

For our clients, Do the Right Thing means that integrity is the core of our services.

Our hard work never stops and all business operations are conducted with up-front honesty and transparency. We provide our clients with integrated problem solving and strive to always be proactive and not reactive to issues that we encounter. Our experienced leadership team understands the challenges that our clients face in the field and work to ensure that all potential project speed bumps are addressed as soon as possible to allow for alternate solutions and planning. Our teams are informed, involved, and working towards a common goal for our clients with the support of Halo’s leadership and our standardized processes.

Ultimately, if the basis of all business decisions rest solely on our ability as a company to Do the Right Thing - even when no one is looking, even when it isn’t easy, even when it may decrease our profits, and even when it adds more to our workload, we can move forward with confidence that the best is yet to come.
